Every time the CJ/Wrangler has been designed or redesigned, a different company has done the work:

Original: American Bantam

CJ-2/3: Willys-Overland

CJ-5: Kaiser-Willys

YJ Wrangler: AMC

TJ Wrangler: Chrysler

JK Wrangler: DaimlerChrysler

JL Wrangler: FCA

YJ came before the TJ, so that’s flipflopped. You also forgot the CJ-7.

In all the turmoil of the world, Jeep is the common thread that unites us

Look again.

Also the CJ-7 was just a wheelbase stretch on the CJ-5, much like the TJ Wrangler Unlimited. The CJ-7 wasn’t an all new generation. There was also the CJ-6, DJ, and CJ-8 Scrambler. But those were simply variants of an existing CJ-5 design.

Or it’s the curse of whatever company happens to own the brand at the time.

Curses usually don’t just hand you cash.

Yes, but never enough cash to keep its company from needing a new partner.

The YJ to TJ was more of a refresh to me, from leaf springs to coil overs. And square headlights to round. They changed the dash and moved the gas filler from the rear to the side. The YJ roof even fits on the TJ with minor modifications.

Chrysler knew not to play too much with the Jeep Wrangler formula.

I owned 2 TJs. Sold my 97 sahara riding on 35s with a 4 inch lift just this summer. ;(

They also shortened the hood, pulled the windshield forward, and raked it back further.
